During the summer, all students taking Advanced
Placement Language and Composition will be
required to read the following and complete
the accompanying activities.
- A Yellow Raft in Blue Water, by Michael Dorris
- One Writer’s Beginnings, by Eudora Welty.
- 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary
by Dr. Wilfred Funk and Norman Lewis
- Read and do the exercises in 30 Days to
a More Powerful Vocabulary.
You will
be tested on these words the first week
of school. It
is important that you complete all ofthese
exercises – I will collect and
check your completed book during that first
week.
- Select a passage from
each assigned work that you believe
captures the thematic essence of the work.
Type this passage at the top of the essay
sheet, and then write a 300-500 word essay
discussing why you believe this to be the
thematic essence of the text. DO NOT SUMMARIZE
THE PLOT.
This essay is to be typed in Microsoft
Word. Bring a paper copy and a copy on
a disk to the first class meeting.
- Keep a 5 X 8 card (3-hole
punched along one of the 8” sides)
for each novel.
- These will be collected
on the first day of class. For each
novel, record the following:
Side one of card:
1. Author. Title. Place
of publication: Publisher, Copyright date.
2. Summary (approximately
100 words)
3. Statement (one complete sentence)
of theme of book
Side two of card:
4. Quotations (in quotation
marks) from two criticisms (two different articles
about the work) - You may choose to photocopy
and tape the article (or a portion of it) to
the index card or copy any interesting important
phrase or sentence. You will need the following
information for each criticism: Author. "Article." Original
publishing information exactly as youfind it
in the article. Reported in Title of Book.
Ed. (name of editor). Volume. Place of publication:
Publisher, Copyright date. Inclusive pages
of article.
5. List main
characters with a few key phrases that best
summarize personalities.
Always submit
work typed or in blue or black ink.
